Senior Women Find Joy on the Softball field : Meet the Colorado Peaches
Colorado has a
softball team that is in a different league. The Peaches, a softball team from
Lakewood, take great satisfaction in being the oldest in the nation. Though
several are in their 70s, 80s, and 90s, all players are at least 50 years old.
Age is not something that they consider. They merely reflect on how wonderful
they are. Chloe Childers, a former physical education teacher, founded the
Peaches, who went on to compete nationally and won medals. At the Huntsman
World Senior Games in Utah, the oldest participants got an honorary gold medal
for establishing the sport's first 79+ age division. The Peaches had to play
younger players because there were no other teams their age to oppose them;
they won one of their five games. Even Covid couldn't stop them; they just
practiced while wearing masks.

space, and an outdoor amphitheater. The options are unlimited. It is also
captivating to see the sunset and dance around Belmar Park under the stars. The
cultural center and the building next to it offer a beautiful glimpse of
Lakewood in the 1960s. The displays were a lot of fun to look at and provided a
fascinating history lesson. Some of the original structures that were a part of
Lakewood's beginnings are still there. That includes a school, the home of a
Lakewood pioneer, a cattle auction building, and many more structures. While
admiring the gorgeous grounds, gain some historical knowledge from a first-hand
perspective. There is also a gift shop that sells ceramics, jewelry, and
artwork made by local artisans.
